Vastu Tips for Home Mandir — Direction, Placement & Rules

By Ram Krishna Moorti Art20 April 2026

Vastu Shastra provides detailed guidance on where and how to place a mandir in your home for maximum positive energy, peace and prosperity. Whether you are setting up a new pooja room or placing a marble mandir for the first time, following these Vastu principles ensures your sacred space is spiritually aligned.

Best Direction for Home Mandir as Per Vastu

The northeast corner (Ishaan Kon) is the most auspicious direction for a home mandir as per Vastu Shastra. This direction is associated with divine energy and is considered the most sacred zone of the home. The east direction is the second best option — placing the mandir facing east means you face east (towards the rising sun) while praying, which is highly auspicious. North is also acceptable. Avoid placing the mandir in the south, southeast or southwest.

Which Floor and Height?

The mandir should ideally be on the ground floor. If your home has multiple floors, avoid placing it directly below a bathroom or toilet on the upper floor. The moorti should be placed at chest height or slightly above — the deity's eyes should be at or slightly above the worshipper's eye level when seated in prayer. Avoid placing moorti too low (at floor level) or too high (above head level when standing).

Moorti Placement Rules

The main deity moorti should face west so the worshipper faces east. If placed in the north, the worshipper should face south. Never place two Shivlings in one mandir. Broken or damaged moorti should be respectfully immersed in flowing water and replaced. The mandir should not face the main entrance door directly. Keep some distance between the mandir wall and the moorti — do not push the moorti flush against the wall.

What to Avoid as Per Vastu

Do not place the mandir in the bedroom or kitchen if possible. If unavoidable, ensure the mandir faces east and is covered with a cloth at night. Never place the mandir under a staircase. Do not place photographs of deceased ancestors in the same space as deity moorti. Avoid cluttering the mandir area with too many objects.

Our Recommendation

A marble mandir is a permanent, sacred addition to your home. Once installed, it should feel right in both Vastu alignment and aesthetic harmony. We always discuss the intended placement with our clients before crafting — the size, design and orientation of the mandir is often tailored to the specific space.
